Indigenous Beauty

I saw this article about Samantha Harris the other day. Samantha is an Aboriginal girl with huge promise in the international modelling circuit. I was so pleased to see that Aboriginal people can now be seen as being the beautiful people they truly are; even in this ultra-conservative, ultra-racist country.

The first Aboriginal person I know of to ever be called 'Beautiful' openly was the one and only David Gulpilil

Now that we can see Aboriginal people as people, maybe we can start giving them some rights as people!

And on the note of Indigenous rights, my good friend Sam Watson is running in the Brisbane Central electorate on Saturday against the one and only incumbent Premier, Meaty Peter Beattie...So if anyone is eligible to vote, get out and support Sam and Indigenous rights.

Is there still discrimination against Australian Aboriginal people? Do they not have equal rights?

Oh, and you've been tagged.

Yeah Arwen Australia is basically a proving ground for the effectiveness of conservative policy and politics. Even the 'Left' is at the very best of times only centre.

And Shlemazl, there is still enourmous discrimination against Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people in this country. Their only elected representative body was dismantled last year by John Howard and has now been replaced with a 'council' of 5 advisors hand picked by Mr Howard.

And that's just for starters...land rights, health, housing and employment would take hours to explain all the shit Indigenous people have to deal with in this country.

Lilly, I'd have to agree on that one! She is pretty easy on the eye

Andrew: sorry for being absent so long. I'll be looking for you on messenger. Oh...and I think I'm in love(jk...my wife wouldn't forgive me:)

BTW: You seem to be of the opinion that conservatives are racists who would like nothing less than to abuse minorities and take away their rights. How wrong you are...

Good to see you again Greg.

It depends on how you define Conservatives.

If you mean conservative in the economic sense, then there is not necessarily any implicit moral agenda.

If you define conservative as being of a regularly confined worldview, then yes opression is necessarily an implicit component of that ideology.

The conservatives in this country are both economically, and generally, conservative; both stand points with which I heartily disagree (actually I hate the social conservativism, and just disagree with the economic conservatism)

Andrew: You have to understand that "conservative" means something different in every country. Whereas in Iran being conservative may mean wanting to annihilate Western civilization, in America, being "conservative" usually means standing for certain norms and values--mostly Protestant Christian.

Whereas in America I see myself as liberal because I'm pro-choice, and support minority rights to a large degree, in Israel I'm definitely a conservative because I think that Jewish needs come first in a Jewish state.

So, my point is that it's impossible to judge somebody just because they claim to be conservative or liberal. It depends on the country, it's political system and the extent of the individual's beliefs.

BTW: I don't get why it seems like all native groups who are darker than the new-comers call themeselves the "Black Panthers." Immigrants from North Africa and the Arab states fighting for eqaul rights in Israel called themselves the "Black Panthers", too...weird.

Hi Greg,

I'm going to be as civil as possible with this.

Frankly I find the views you have expressed on my blog to be blatantly racist, crude and more than a little insensitive; although to your credit you have delivered them very politely.

But nevertheless, I find these views and opinions extremely offensive; so I would prefer it if you did not comment on my blog anymore.

I of course can't stop you from having your views or expressing them, however I do not wish my blog to be a platform in any way for these ideas.

All the best,

Andrew

Andrew, this is only my third time visiting your blog...and I've enjoyed reading it....

I'm a conservative American. I'm white, and my son-in-law and two grandchildren are black...I do not consider myself a racist in any respect....but I'm puzzled about something I just read in the above comments....

I read the statements that "Greg" made and I can't find the racism you referred to....could you clarify for me please what he said that you view as racist.....

I'm not being argumentative...just confused....Cookie

Hi Cookie, thanks for stopping by my blog! Glad you like it; I'm still yet to be convinced that this is actually a worthwhile blog...but I'll give it some more time.

The following is probably the most inflamatory comment from Greg; one which I find racist, ignorant and verging on the absurd.

Greg said...
Andrew: you seem to pay so much attention to abuses against minorities while it also seems like you don't care at all about the rights of majorities. In America, for example, blacks were persecuted for centuries. These days, it's the whites that are persecuted because it's "in" to be black, becuase blacks dominate almost all major sports, because blacks send their kids to the best univsities thanks to affirmitive action and because blacks who don't feel like working get a free-pass on life. I don't know about you but it seems ridiculous to me. I have a few black friends back in Chicago, and my beloved chess coach was black so I have no problem with them. It's the government that has given African-Americans special priviledges that I have a problem with

Note the typical "I'm not a racist" defense.

I have a few black friends back in Chicago, and my beloved chess coach was black so I have no problem with them

So if I have some black friends it means I can go to town on anyone else with the same skin colour?

Tooners I think she does look somewhat similar to Halle Berry...but you know what I think she's alot more like Samantha Harris :P

Andrew...OK...I didn't see this comment...but I can see where you might misinterpret his comment as racist. I say misinterpret for this reason....what he said is true to varying degree's.

Even my son-in-law (he is Black) has some problems with certain affirmative action policies. He gives lectures around the country that basically state that it's time for the Black man (in America) to stop blaming all their problems on the white man and take responsibility for their own futures and present situations.

If I'm reading "Greg's" comment correctly...and I could be wrong...I believe he was just stating the facts regarding current conditions as they are...and not meaning them to be racist in nature. I know that I didn't take any umbrage to them and believe me...I'm VERY protective of my son-in-law and grandchildren...and at times can also be over-sensitive to wrongly percieved "racist" remarks.....

Cookie I understand that there is definately a place for self-determination and action to improve your own condition, but let's not forget that African-Americans, just like Indigenous Americans and Indigenous Australians, have inhabited the ABSOLUTE lowest social positions right accross the board for so long that it takes some huge efforts and social changes to allieviate social problems which have arisen due to this and to redress imbalances in the services given to communities.

When you have a black or indigenous president, when numbers of students in college are proportionately equivalent to the majority, when the life expectancy is raised and infant mortality drops and when decent infrastructure is provided; THEN I believe the idea of government support will negate itself.

blacks who don't feel like working get a free-pass on life

Those kind of comments go hand in hand with those other comments along the lines of "Blacks all eat watermelons with their big, hoochy-koochy lips" and both types of comments usually come from useless, white shit-stains who needed slaves to get anything done.

Asians come to America and prosper. Indians come to America and Prosper. Europeans come to America and prosper. Every other race has come to America, created productive lives and prospered. Africans come to America and hold out their hands. They were brought as slaves, sold to America by their own people. Were enslaved for years. But that was a long time ago. Their freedom to return to their homeland has been in place, but they choose to stay in America. Stay and bleed America while the rest of the country works hard to support their burden. Racist...you fucken better believe it. But not for the color of their skin or the continent they are from, but for their lazy animalistic behavior. You little boy need to realize that ALL people are NOT the same. Wouldn't the world be so much simpler if they were... but unfortunately for you, it's just not the case. Racism can only be stopped at the source and the source of African American racism is with the African Americans, not the white people who are tired of feeding them. When behavior changes, stereotypes will be erased. American prisons are 57% African American yet the entire race makes up only 16% of the country's population. American police are terrified of civil rights violations and assuredly treat all criminals the same. The fact that most of them are black is not the fault of the judicial system or the police. It's just the way things are. People who continue to make excuses for these facts only do more disservice to these people than they do to themselves already. People need to take responsibility for their own actions, even blacks. You need to grow up and live a few more years before you comment on people's racism. Some of us have had enough personal experiences to qualify us in our opinions. You are still just a dumb little boy.

Ahhh, so I must be gay to not find your little swollen lipped ape girl attractive? Interesting such an advocate for the oppressed has no problem making derogatory comments about gays. To use the gay reference to try to insult or humiliate me is something one might expect you would vehemently object to, being the bleeding heart lover of all of humanity that you claim to be. In fact, you are nothing more than just another self righteous jackass hypocrite with no access to any form of spell check. You are a disgrace to all bleeding hearts of the world...

No, just a hill-billy. Which you are already.

And besides I said SHE'D have to look disgusting for you to be attracted to her, not that she is already.

being the bleeding heart lover of all of humanity that you claim to be.

Show me where I claim that and I'll remove it immediately. I hate you and people like you, unashamedly.

In fact, you are nothing more than just another self righteous jackass hypocrite...

How long did it take you to realise that one? Of course I am; I'm better than you are and I know it :)

Sorry boy. I gave you more credit than you obviously deserved to think you could muster up a metaphor. I am honored to be among the people you hate. And even more pleased to be better than you, for to even say such a thing shows your inferiority. I would have never assumed to be better than you until you chose to prove it to me. Thank you little fella. You reinforce the notion that the world is full of complete and total morons. Your parents must be totally ashamed.
